Meet The Studio Member: Katie Fritz

How long have you been living in Madison?
Oh, boy. I grew up just east of Madison so I have been in the area most of my 32 years. I officially moved into the city 3 years ago after having lived in Chicago for 4 years while I was studying acupuncture & oriental medicine. 

What led you to pursue acupuncture professionally?KatieFritz
While I was studying at Edgewood College I met a young lady who introduced me to the holistic health field. I ended up volunteering with an amazing acupuncturist on the West side of Madison and was so blown away by her clinical results, the patient-provider interaction & the community that she fostered. It really struck a chord with me. I spent the summer in her clinic and then signed up for my program that fall. It was the best decision I have ever made!

One song all of us should stop everything and listen to right now is:
Anything on Thank Me Later. I just found out about Drake! But maybe for right now we should all listen to “Faithful” by Ibeyi.
Your all-time favorite meal is:
If I could marry a sandwich it would be the West of the Andes with roasted veggies (from the Weary Traveler). But I really love to eat food so most things are fair game.

On the weekends, we can find you…
At The Studio, obvi!? : ) Saturday’s I like to hop to the farmer’s market early & then do one or two yoga classes. You can also find me at Morrison Park. I’ll be the one walking a white cat on a leash.

Quick! If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I have a long-standing love affair with New Orleans but if we’re going some place new I say Belize!

What’s something that we might not know about you upon first glance?
I have a webbed toe on my right foot. Just the one.

Think of your first time practicing yoga. If you could go back, what’s one piece of advice you would tell yourself now?
I would have encouraged myself to get a firm grasp on the foundations of form but also to listen to my body & focus on the breath. Young Fritz practiced Bikram yoga & it was pretty much like a sport. Things are very different now.

The word is you attend 5+ classes a week, can you give us 3 ways that a regular practice helps you off the mat?
1. Having a stronger core helps us hold our bones up. That was something significant I noticed from doing all that yoga barre.
2. Hello, breath work! Let’s all breathe deep, as much as possible, all day everyday. It is life. A regular yoga practice has made me much more mindful of my breath.
3. Nourishment of the spirit. That’s a big one! A regular yoga practice means: strength, commitment, community, connection to one’s own self but also to the big themes & the natural rhythms. It is good for the mind and the spirit because it is good for the body – they are inseparable!
